Once upon a time, when you spoke to men about yoga, they almost immediately had images of Lululemon-clad women chanting verses of Sanskrit while bending their bodies into impossible positions.

For the hockey-playing, basketball-watching, sports-obsessed male species, the practice of yoga was about as appealing as watching a Julia Roberts romantic comedy -- twice.

However, times -- and old-standing stereotypes -- have changed thanks, in part, to the evolution of male-specific sport versus female-specific sport. More women are tackling the football field while more men are doing the downward dog.

Yoga has become the new cross-training for men looking to increase their flexibility and improve their muscle conditioning so the next time they hit the field or the rink, their bodies will bend into nearly impossible positions -- willingly.

Paul McQuillan, a yoga instructor at Toronto's Bikram Yoga Centre, has been practising yoga -- specifically, Bikram or hot yoga, a style of yoga that takes place in rooms heated to about 40 C -- for three years. Yoga has improved both his physical and mental strength, he says, while revitalizing his energy levels. Here, he explains the advantages of yoga and how men can benefit from it.

1. Yoga works the entire body

In sports such as hockey, tennis or football, you tend to utilize only 10 to 15 per cent of the body, whereas yoga provides a workout that covers every muscle, joint and organ. The practice oxygenates the blood, creating more energy when you finish the exercise as opposed to depleting the body of it. You work every system: cardiovascular, skeletal, muscular and endocrine.

2. Yoga has benefits in the bedroom

Guradasana, or Eagle Pose, is a posture that sends fresh blood and oxygen to the sexual organs, so this is a particularly beneficial exercise for men in revitalizing their bedroom prowess! Trikonasana, or Triangle Pose, is a marriage of the heart and the lungs, two organs that don't usually interact. Not only does this posture increase cardiovascular endurance, but it is also the only known yoga posture that utilizes every organ, muscle and joint in the body.

The Cretan Labyrinth is graced upon our Yoga Studio floor in a 7 circuit design.  
Labyrinth CeremonyThe Labyrinth at Knossos burned to the ground in the 15th century BC, yet the idea of the labyrinth survived. Through the centuries, in Greece and throughout the Mediterranean, a common symbol began to be associated with the labyrinth and its legends. Known today as the Cretan or 7-circuit labyrinth, it consists of a single path winding back and forth to a center point in a series of seven concentric rings.The origins of this symbol are somewhat mysterious. It may have spread quickly—and lasted for so many centuries—because the secret of how to draw it (using a seed pattern construction technique) was passed on from generation to generation and civilization to civilization. More intriguingly, the shape of the 7-circuit labyrinth also mirrors the motion of the planet mercury in the sky over a long period of time. Did some ancient astronomer record this motion, and create the labyrinth symbol based upon it? We will probably never know.

Walking the Crystal LabyrinthThe earliest known use of the 7-circuit labyrinth symbol occurs on a clay tablet from the Mycenaean palace at Pylos in Greece. A fire destroyed this palace around 1200 BC, baking the clay tablet and preserving it for archaeologists. The labyrinth was probably a scribe's doodle, because the other side of the tablet was part of the palace records, and lists a number of men who were each owed a goat!

In the following centuries the identical labyrinth, however, turned up on an Etruscan wine jug in Italy, on rock outcrops carved in Spain, on a roof tile of the Parthenon and even as graffito in an Egyptian quarry. The labyrinth also begins to be associated with another Greek legend, that of the fall of the city of Troy, around this time.  This walkinCharging the Labyrinth with Soundg meditation graces us with great gifts of peace and harmonic balance.

NEW MOON Crystal walk... 

Quartz crystals transmit, store and amplify energy as well as hold memory. When stimulated with heat, electricity or even thought forms they react and amplify the energy put forth. The Cretan labyrinth is fully lined with 800 quartz crystals which are specifically laid out with the terminated ends (pointed ends) pointing in one direction so that energy flows one way - towards the center key of the labyrinth. In the center, a cluster of quartz crystals are placed with an arrangement of citrine crystals. Four Lemurian crystals are placed in the four directions. These crystals are found in the sand in Brazil and Madagascar unlike other quartz crystals which are found in clusters. It is thought that the Atlantean civilization left these Lemurian crystals planted in the sands of South America containing memory from their civilization in the hopes that future Light Workers would be able to decode their information. These particular stones have striations up the sides that compare to the lines found on our CD's or old vinyl records. As the Atlantean civilization communicated telepathically, this was their means of storing information and the stones that are being found today are no less than an Atlantean library. The entire labyrinth is charged with sound using a clear quartz hand-held third eye (Note "A") practitioners bowl. The vibration from the sound activates every crystal in the labyrinth. When walking the New Moon labyrinth it is important to set new goals and have positive thoughts when inside as your intentions will be amplified. This is a powerful, yet gentle and positive experience.

Oxygen Therapy for Headache Pain

For the nearly one million Americans who suffer from cluster headaches, relief may be just a breath... of pure oxygen... away. Cluster headaches are acutely painful headaches that come in waves... with several short headaches a day over a period of weeks or months. It's not known what causes them nor what might cure them... but a recent review of research suggests that oxygen therapy, in particular what's known as "normobaric" (normal pressure) oxygen therapy (NBOT), can effectively relieve the pain. This is good news for sufferers of cluster headaches, as NBOT is an easy and natural alternative -- and, perhaps most importantly, it works really fast. 

RESEARCH FINDINGS

The lead author of the meta-analysis, Michael Bennett, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, explored the effectiveness of two kinds of oxygen therapy for prevention and treatment of headaches -- NBOT, which involves breathing 100% oxygen from a portable oxygen tank with a mask... and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which involves breathing oxygen at higher than normal atmospheric pressure in a sealed chamber. Dr. Bennett reviewed nine small clinical trials involving 201 participants, noting that 76% of patients experienced relief when treated with NBOT for their cluster headaches and not much from HBOT. He also found evidence, though nowhere near as strong or compelling, that HBOT relieves migraine headaches. While NBOT is "cheap and easy to apply" as a therapy for cluster headache patients, Dr. Bennett expressed caution about the use of HBOT for migraines, given its "high cost, poor availability and inconvenience," saying more research needs to be done. The study was published July 16, 2008, in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Alexander Mauskop, MD, a board-certified neurologist and director of the New York Headache Center, who uses oxygen therapy in his practice, explained why this treatment is helpful to people who suffer from these very particular headaches. (Note: Oxygen therapy is not currently recommended for relief from any other kind of headache and should never be attempted on your own.) 

OXYGEN USE

According to Dr. Mauskop, up to 70% of cluster headache patients can attain relief within five to 10 minutes of breathing in 100% oxygen. For oxygen therapy to work, the oxygen must be inhaled through a mask at high flow (between 8 to 10 liters per minute). It is believed that oxygen helps by offsetting metabolic changes that cause pain and vasospasms due to oxygen depletion. 

Effective as it is for cluster headaches, Dr. Mauskop notes that this therapy probably will not be helpful in alleviating any other kind of headache pain. Visit a neurologist for a headache evaluation if you think you may have cluster headaches and might benefit from NBOT. And by the way, it should be noted that NBOT is distinct from other oxygen therapies that are available in spas and at trendy oxygen bars. In those, the concentration of oxygen is likely to be much lower than 100% -- in fact, those "oxygen treatments" are typically just a few percent points more than the usual 21% we breathe in the air.
